As households in the UK face continued pressure on their energy bills driven by global energy crises, and governments seek to strengthen energy security and resilience, home finance professionals have an increasingly important role to play in supporting better, more efficient homes. The scale of the opportunity is significant: the Climate Change Committee’s Seventh Carbon Budget estimates that decarbonising the built environment represents a £373 billion investment opportunity across the public and private sectors. According to the UK Green Building Council, two low-carbon retrofits are needed every minute if we are to reach Net Zero goals by 2050.

In 2019, there were just four green mortgage products and propositions. In 2026, that number has expanded to over 90, and investment in green home finance solutions continues to accelerate. Homebuyers are asking new questions: How much will this home cost to heat? Can I get financial support for energy upgrades? Will lenders reward me for buying a more efficient home that costs less to run? With 87% of mortgage transactions going via intermediary channels in 2025 (according to IMLA), brokers who can answer these questions will be best positioned to provide informed guidance, capture emerging opportunities, and build lasting client relationships.

“It is imperative that advisers working within financial services understand the impact that having energy inefficient homes have on the world and what assistance is available to finance retrofitting in order for us all to work towards a net-zero future. The information provided by the Green Finance Institute has really opened my mind to how advisers can help with the climate crisis by reducing the carbon footprint of the homes that we are arranging mortgages for.”

Paul Knowles

Mortgage Broker, Greater Manchester

“The training provided by GFI was informative on a very interesting topic, hosts were both knowledgeable and passionate about how the information could help us to help brokers. The training is beneficial because we are all keen to have more topics to discuss with brokers to add value to their businesses and ‘Green’ is a key subject where we can all see the benefit/implications.”

Michelle Walsh

"Provided excellent background information and very useful information. It confirmed some of the knowledge I thought I had and gave me a much better and clearer understanding of not only the issues but also the opportunities. Chloe's knowledge and expertise really made this a worthwhile training course. In addition to the set course programme, there was always ample opportunities for me to ask questions and give my own opinion so I did feel fully involved in the training."
