Certificate in Green Mortgages

The UK’s 29 million homes represent the oldest housing stock in Europe, with circa. 23% of the UK’s total carbon emissions coming from buildings. It has been estimated by the Climate Change Committee that £250 billion worth of investment is required to upgrade the UK’s homes to transition to net zero by 2050.

The investment required in the UK’s housing stock cannot be solely funded by government. Access to private sector finance is essential to fund energy efficiency upgrades. The green mortgage market has grown from grown from four products in 2019 to 61 in 2024, with continued investment and product design anticipated over the coming years. With 84% of all mortgage transactions completed by a mortgage adviser, the industry can play a key role in educating customers on how to finance green home improvements.

“The webinar with the green finance Institute was a fantastic introduction to green mortgages and the Green Finance sector. It is imperative that advisers working within financial services understand the impact that having energy inefficient homes have on the world and what assistance is available to finance retrofitting in order for us all to work towards a net-zero future. The information provided by the Green Finance Institute has really opened my mind to how advisers can help with the climate crisis by reducing the carbon footprint of the homes that we are arranging mortgages for. Rachael and Matt were very engaging and I would recommend any adviser speak to them about the future of the mortgage market and what they can do to assist in the fight against climate change and the decarbonising of the housing sector.”

Mortgage Broker,

“The training provided by GFI was informative on a very interesting topic, hosts were both knowledgeable and passionate about how the information could help us to help brokers. The training is beneficial because we are all keen to have more topics to discuss with brokers to add value to their businesses and ‘Green’ is a key subject where we can all see the benefit/implications.”
