Integrating Nature into Transition Plans: Lessons Learned from Early Experience

Introduction

Businesses face increasing disruption from the degradation of nature and climate change. Escalating impacts from extreme heat, drought, and wildfires have underscored the dependence of business performance on healthy ecosystems and reinforced the case for greater investment in nature and climate resilience.

In response, UK businesses are beginning to develop coordinated approaches to their investments through systematic plans which integrate nature stewardship and climate adaptation.

To support this shift, the Green Finance Institute convened a Nature Transition Plan Pilot Group, bringing together businesses from eight sectors to explore how nature can be incorporated into transition planning. The Pilot was anchored in the implementation of the TNFD’s Guidance on Nature in Transition Plans.

This paper captures the lessons learned from those early experiences and answers the following questions:

  • Why are UK businesses developing integrated transition plans?
  • What first steps are businesses taking in developing their transition plans?
  • What challenges are business facing and how are they tackling them?

Whether your organisation is just beginning its nature journey or looking to strengthen existing plans, the insights shared here provide practical examples of how to align capital allocation and actions with managing long-term nature risks and opportunities.
