About Revenues for Nature

Revenues for Nature (R4N) launched in March 2024 and focuses on identifying, replicating and scaling models and mechanisms that unlock private sector investment into nature restoration and nature-based solutions. Private sector investment is essential if we hope to meet the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework which requires $200 billion annually to be mobilised, as laid out in Target 19.

In Phase 1 of R4N, we are working with partners in eight countries across the globe to support the replication and scaling of revenue models that span supply chain models and regulatory models and that have the potential to unlock an initial $200 million by 2027. In addition to supporting these partners, we provide information on all models we identify, as well as case studies and detailed guidebooks.

As part of our commitment to scaling, we are developing a community of governments, businesses, financial institutions and project developers through our Community of Practice to share learning and form partnerships.

R4N is funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and led by the Green Finance Institute’s Nature Programme (GFI Hive), the UNDP Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) and UN EP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), with the contribution of the En vironmental Policy Innovation Center (EPIC).

Models shared with the R4N project are selected according to a set of criteria that include high-integrity environmental outcomes and the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Implementation Partners

R4N supports an initial seven models across eight countries across the globe. Through working with partners and governments, R4N, aims to demonstrate the replicability and scaling of models and mechanisms that unlock private sector investment, such as mitigation banking, payments for ecosystem services, commodity supply chain financing and more.

Guidebook Series

As part of the Revenues for Nature Programme, GFI, UNEP FI and UNDP Biofin have developed guidebooks for governments, businesses and project developers on existing models that can unlock private sector investment into nature restoration, nature-based solutions and conservation. The aim is to support the replication of successful models globally.

Revenues for Nature Database

Community of Practice

The Community of Practice is open to all and aims to collect relevant expertise to inform challenges and opportunities towards Target 19 of the GBF. Participants to the Community of Practice will receive monthly updates about the R4N project and bespoke opportunities for engagement based on participants’ interest and expertise – as detailed in the registration of interest form.
